A list of publications is chronological order:
- Worlton, Daniel S. (2014). “超越汉字:现代汉语音节动态统计分析.” 李晓琪、贾益民、徐娟(编辑)《数字化汉语教学(2014)》,北京:清华大学出版社, 437-443. [Beyond Characters: A Statistical Look at Chinese Syllables]
This was my first paper. It evolved out of a term paper in my first semester at BLCU, which in turn was based on me mucking about with some statistics. It’s pretty unreadable, but does lay out the basis of deriving syllable-oriented statistics from hanzi-based resources. Presented the paper in Xiamen, Fujian
The core results are available here.
- Worlton, Daniel S. (2015). “播客在对外汉语教学中的应用——以iMandarinPod为例.”邢红兵(主编)《汉语测试、习得与认知研究》,北京:中国书籍出版社,270-284. [The Use of Podcasts in Foreign Learning of Chinese]
This was a freebie paper in a book my advisor put together with some leftover money in the budget. Beyond outlining the theoretical utility of podcasts for language education, it builds a small corpus in order to analyze the vocabulary as a system.
- Worlton, Daniel S. (2016). “挖掘音节:汉语音节的声调分布概率分析.” 李晓琪、金铉哲、徐娟(编辑)《数字化汉语教学(2016)》,北京:清华大学出版社,205-212. [Statistical Analysis of Tone in Relation to Chinese Syllables]
A sequel to my first paper at the next meeting of the same conference (e.g. Association for the Modernization of Chinese Language Education). I improved the central database and focused the statistical analysis on the breakdown between syllables and toneless segments. Presented the paper in Seoul, Korea.
- English, A.S. & Worlton, D.S. (2017). Coping with Uprooting Stress During Domestic Educational Migration in China. Journal of Pacific Rim Psychology,11, E9.
Another “freebie” offered in thanks for helping midwife a couple of papers to completion. This paper is in the field of cross-cultural psychology, and looks at Chinese university students in China. English collected and analyzed the data, while I contributed fully towards the creation of the narrative, writing, and editing.
- 李梅秀, Worlton, Daniel S., & 邢红兵. (2018). “基于语料库统计的‘音-形’激活概率及加工机制.” 心理学探新, 65-72. [Corpus Statistics-based Phonological-Orthographic Activation Probabilities and Processing Mechanism]
I was also in the backseat of this paper, though my database of Chinese syllable statistics is at the core of the experimental design of an experiment aimed at teasing out the relations between Chinese phonology and orthography in the native speaker’s mental lexicon.
- Worlton, Daniel S. (2019) “汉语听觉通道单词识别的联结主义模型及其计算模拟.” 博士毕业论文,北京语言大学. [Connectionist Modeling of Spoken Word Recognition in Chinese]
My doctoral dissertation. I intend to translate it in its entirety in English.
